Established in 1973, Braes of Glenlivet Distillery was eponymously named for the location where it was built. The Braes were notoriously known for illicit distilleries in the years before the Excise Act of 1823; its remote location made it an ideal place for stills to run undisturbed by authorities.
The distillery changed its name to Braeval in 1995 so as not to be confused with other distilleries in the area.
