The Dallas Dhu Distillery, built less than two miles outside of Forres, is one of the westernmost Speyside distilleries and uniquely powered parts of its production with a water wheel until 1971. As an operational distillery, Dallas Dhu has had somewhat of a rocky time; for more than twenty years of its distilling history it lay silent. Between its founding in 1898 and its final closure in 1983, Dallas Dhu changed hands three times, endured a fire that caused over £7000 worth of damage, and was forced to close due to World War II’s barley rationing.
The mothballed distillery was purchased in 1988 by Scotland’s Historic Buildings and Monuments Directorate who now operate the site as a museum and part of Speyside’s Malt Whisky Trail.
