Matured in a First fill Sherry butt and distilled on 19th December 1953, our Gordon & MacPhail 1953 from Strathisla Distillery is an exceptionally rare whisky, with a rich contrast of sweet, fruity aromas complemented by a delicious variety of dark fruits on the palate and a delightfully balanced finish, with a hint of oak.
Initially, cascading aromas of dried fruit and rich sherry. Hints of wood polish and candied fruit combine with an intense note of orange oil. Baking spices – clove, nutmeg, allspice – combine before revealing a subtle menthol edge.
Initial mature oak notes open into flavours of autumnal berries: blackberry, blackcurrant, redcurrant, and cranberry. Crystallised ginger develops while traces of dark chocolate add complexity. Aniseed notes remain.
A delightfully balanced fruit and oak finish; nutty notes underscore a subtle but lingering humidor edge.
Strathisla Distillery, the oldest continuously operating distillery in Scotland, is a delightful distillery to visit because of its fairy-tale quality with its distinctive double pagodas and old cobbled courtyard. Founded by George Taylor and Alexander Milne, the distillery originally known as Milltown became operational in 1786. The distillery flip-flopped between names (Milltown, Strathisla, Milton) until 1951, Chivas Brothers officially settled on Strathisla as this was the name of the actual whisky produced.
Today, much of Strathisla's production is used for blending and the distillery is the home of one of the world’s most famous blends – ‘Chivas Regal’.
