Whiskies from Glenrothes are known for taking their time to open up in the glass. Our Private Collection 1974 from Glenrothes Distillery is no different; a complex blend of Sherry-soaked fruitcake aromas revealing hints of chocolate on the palate and then charred oak on the finish.
Complex; aromas of sherry soaked fruitcake filled with stewed sultanas mingle with sticky medjool dates. Dark chocolate and citrus peel notes develop; a gentle woodiness with a delicate herbal edge comes to the fore.
Elegant, smooth, and sweet; subtle cinnamon and nutmeg flavours balance the mature oak and sherry influences. Notes of fruit and nut chocolate, toasted walnut, and hints of raisin emerge and evolve into zesty citrus. Salted toffee develops towards the end.
A modest, medium sweet finish fades; hints of charred oak and chocolate remain.
Not to be confused with the town of Glenrothes, just north of Edinburgh and home to the huge grain distillery of Cameronbridge, this malt distillery is in fact located in the town of Rothes, between Elgin and Dufftown, where there are five malt whisky producers.
Only one carries the name of the town, and that is Glen Rothes. Founded in 1878, the distillery was completed with a small loan from the local church and can be found tucked away along a tiny street off the main road.
This single malt has become something of a cult whisky in the past decade or so, famed for its Battenburg cake flavours, and has grown decade after decade between the 1960s and 2000s, seemingly swerving all the pitfalls of the industry. Clearly a blessed spirit indeed.
