Private Collection 1954 from Glenlivet Distillery

Private Collection 1954 from Glenlivet Distillery

The versatility of this spirit allows it to mature majestically in both Sherry and bourbon casks. It’s also an excellent candidate for long-term maturation as seen in our Gordon & MacPhail 1954 from Glenlivet Distillery. Matured for 64 years in one of our carefully selected refill Sherry butts, this exceptional whisky delicately balances the sweetness of golden syrup, stewed fruit, and dark chocolate with spicy black peppercorn, with a hint of mature oak on the finish.

    Nose

Initially sweet with hints of brown sugar and toffee apple; light herbal aromas evolve into hard candy notes. Traces of cinnamon and aniseed add depth whilst thick fruit jam, lemon curd, and vanilla undertones linger. Aromatic fresh-roasted coffee beans balance orange zest.

    Nose
    Taste

Silky, smooth, and mouth coating; thick golden syrup mingles with stewed fruit and rum and raisin. Touches of dark chocolate complement the delicate Sherry flavours. Sweet brown sugar remains whilst hints of walnut add a slightly drying aspect.

    Finish

A refined and humble dram with a black peppercorn and lingering mature oak finish.

    Glenlivet Distillery

George Smith, founder of The Glenlivet Distillery, came from a long line of illicit distillers. In 1817 Smith inherited leased land at Upper Drumin Farm where he continued the family tradition to supplement his crofter’s wage. Smith was the first to incorporate his distilling operation after the Excise Act of 1823 was pushed through Parliament, championed by the Duke of Gordon - Smith's landlord. The duke not only persuaded Smith to take out the first license in the parish of Glenlivet but he also contributed to the distillery build at Drumin. Thanks to their vision – and that of George’s son, John Gordon Smith – the distillery would produce a spirit that defined Speyside whisky. Because of the quality, success, and respect attained, several distilleries in the region appended the name Glenlivet to their own. This led to a landmark decision in 1884 that stipulated in law that only Smith’s single malt could call itself ‘The Glenlivet’ (photo courtesy of John Paul Photography).
