Littlemill
Alongside Rosebank and St Magdalene, Littlemill is arguably one of the most sadly missed Lowland single malts - and is one which, if it were still around, could potentially lay claim to being the oldest Scotch distillery in Scotland. Tracing its distilling roots back to 1772 Littlemill was based on a site where brewing was said to have taken place since the 14th century- so perhaps some illicit distilling took place during this time too?
Either way, this once triple-distilled malt (moving to double-distillation in the early 1930s) produced a light, buttery and floral single malt until 1992, when its stills fell silent and the distillery was eventually closed for good in 1994.
A fire in 2004 finally sealed the distillery’s fate and although some of the buildings still remain, it’s highly unlikely that distilling will occur again. Fortunately, remaining casks of Littlemill have survived the test of time, with a rich honeyed note adding to the distinctive lightness.
