Set in Grantown-on-Spey, the Balmenach Distillery has a great deal in common with another pioneering Speysider, Glenlivet; these two were among the first to be recognised as official and legitimate distilleries after the introduction of the 1823 Excise Act.

Today, the distillery is unique as the only established mainland distillery to also produce both gin and single malt whisky. Balmenach produces a light, sweet, and fruity whisky which has a surprisingly herbal, spicy finish.
