Whisky Guide > Whisky Course at Moray College
A 'MOUSE' AND ITS DRAM
From Speyside, where over half of Scotland's operating distilleries are located, a newly designed whisky course has been
developed jointly by Gordon & MacPhail in association with Moray College (partner in University of the Highlands and
Islands network). Over 15 G&M staff contributed to this innovative computer-based project.
In the comfort of your home - 'mouse' in one hand and a dram in the other - you discover the differences between Speyside,
Islay, Highland and Lowland malts, as well as gaining an insight into the rich diversity of the industry in Scotland and
elsewhere.
Students 'click' on to 20 hours of learning from a CD-ROM and to make sure homework is carried out, a set of eight different
miniatures and three nosing glasses are helpfully provided!
Tutor for the course is well-known whisky writer and educator, John Lamond,
whose experience in the industry stretches back over the past thirty years.
He says:
"The course provides the student with a grounding in the
history of whisky, its production process and economic importance and
aids their greater understanding of the product. It develops skills in
nosing and tasting and, in particular, focuses on developing an appreciation
of the general characteristics of the different styles and types of Scotch
whisky."
"It's a unique and user-friendly course which is intended
to be relaxed, enjoyable and fun to complete. All course
work can be quite easily undertaken within the comfort
of one's own home and completion
equips the student for a role as a whisky ambassador"
Successful completion of assessments, both written and via phone, leads to the awarding of a Moray College/Gordon & MacPhail
Certificate.
