The Last 400 Years
The history of Scotch Whisky over the last 400 years has been an extraordinary one, especially since Highland
Single Malts have only legally been available in any quantity for the last 170 years. Initially whisky was lauded
for its medicinal qualities, being prescribed for the preservation of health, the prolongation of life, and for
the relief of colic, palsy, smallpox and a host of other ailments.
Fittingly 1494 was also the year the University of Aberdeen was founded - the first in Britain to teach medicine.
Whisky soon became an intrinsic part of Scottish life - reviver and stimulant during the long cold winters
and a feature of social life.
Gradually distillation methods improved. The dissolution of the monasteries contributed to this since many of the
monks driven from their sanctuaries, had no choice but to put their skills to use
