Changing hands

1888 - Distillery founded by a partnership of Blenders & Merchants, including Alexander Edward and Peter Mackie. The same year that the name "Dewar" was registered as a trademark.


1891 - Distillery completed - layout and design by Charles Doig of Elgin.


1919 - The company was wholly acquired by Mackie & Co. Ltd, owners of the White Horse brand.


1927 - Acquired by DCL after the death of Sir Peter Mackie.


1930 - Brought under the SMD umbrella.


1964-5 - Rebuilt, number of stills doubled to four.


1995 - Cask filling stopped, all spirit tankered away for centralised filling. Cask warehouses were subsequently demolished.


1998 - Sold to John Dewar & Sons, along with Aberfeldy, Royal Brackla and Aultmore.
