Aultmore Whisky Distillery

The Mash Tun

Aultmore, like its sister distillery at Craigellachie, has one of the most technically advanced mash tuns in the industry.

As a full lauter tun, the arms can move up and down while rotating. The arms use a combination of rakes and blades (pictured right) to ensure maximum extraction of sugars.

The tun also operates continuous sparging, meaning that the water is added continuously and not in batches as is traditionally done. This again aids extraction but also increases the speed of the mashing process.
