Situated
on the outskirts of the ancient town of Forres, Benromach
Distillery has had a chequered history, changing hands several
times and also laying silent. The last time this elusive malt
was bottled as a single malt appears to have been during the
1900's.
Gordon & MacPhail purchased Benromach
in 1993 and history was made in June 1996 when they announced
the revival of Benromach Single Malt Scotch Whisky, one of
Speyside's best-kept secrets.
Work began in 1997 to re-equip the distillery
with production equipment. This included two new stills, a
new mash tun and wash backs which had been re-worked from
the originals. The first spirit ran off the stills in the
Autumn of Benromach's Centenary Year, 1998.
H.R.H. The Prince of Wales officially re-opened
the distillery in October 1998. Since that achievement Benromach
Distillery opened its doors to the visiting public in August
1999 and visitors are warmly welcomed in the Malt Whisky Centre,
which was formerly the old drier house.
Benromach can now be enjoyed in several expressions;
Benromach Traditional, an 18 year old, a 25 year old, a 1969
(43%) vintage expression and 1980 Cask Strength at 58.1%.
