Rare Vintage range continues winning streak at Malt Maniac Awards 2016

Gordon & MacPhail’s Rare Vintage range has received a number of awards and honours this year, and its success continued at the recent Malt Maniac Awards (MMAs). The MMAs first launched in 2003, and since then have become an important fixture in the whisky calendar.

Three vintages of the Gordon & MacPhail Rare Vintage Glen Grant were awarded silver at the MMAs: the 1949, 1954 and the 1961.

The Rare Vintage Glen Grant trio impressed the judges with their individual flavour and aroma profiles.

The dark gold Rare Vintage Glen Grant 1949 40% has a long, floral and smoky finish. Delicate sherry aromas with hints of burnt sugar make way for pineapple and mango aromas with water added, opening up a zesty orange edge.

The Rare Vintage Glen Grant 1954 40% is a golden amber, full-bodied single malt from first fill sherry casks. Bursting with fruit, with flavours of strawberry and cantaloupe melon, which develop into hints of red apple and aniseed aromas.

The Rare Vintage Glen Grant 1961 40% is the perfect after dinner dram. Its peppery notes develop into fresh grapefruit and red currant flavours, with dark chocolate and delicate smoky undertones.

Speyside’s Glen Grant is one of many distilleries that have had a relationship with Gordon & MacPhail since the early days of the business. Through these relationships, Gordon & MacPhail was able to approach distillery owners, seeking permission to bottle specially selected casks to provide consumers with an exclusive vintage.

Stephen Rankin, director and a member of the Urquhart family, which owns Gordon & MacPhail, said: “The Rare Vintage range has had another successful year, with several of its single malts receiving awards and accolades."

“For three of the Rare Vintage Glen Grant expressions to receive awards demonstrates our expertise in selecting casks, matching them to new-make spirit and carefully nurturing and maturing our whiskies to create beautiful, unique single malts.”

In partnership with each respective distillery, all whiskies in the 'Rare Vintage' range are uniquely labelled. In years gone by many of these unique designs were seen and used as the official bottlings of the whisky under licence from the distillery. Today these trusted relationships with distillers enables Gordon & MacPhail to bottle exclusive vintages of single malt at various strengths - all with their unique distillery label.
