A SPIRITED GRAND REOPENING

Gordon & MacPhail celebrated the grand reopening of their Retail Shop at 58-60 South Street, Elgin on Saturday 30th October 2004, and welcomed over 6,000 thousand people to the newly refurbished premises.

Jim Murray teh Independant and Ronnie Routledge the Shop ManagerThe Retail Shop first opened the doors to its “centrical and commodious” premises back in May 1895 and has endeavoured to provide its customers with the most unique and distinctive products of the highest quality ever since. Now, nearly 110 years later, Gordon & MacPhail is delighted to be able to offer its customers a new and enhanced shopping experience with a Whisky Room, Wine Room and large delicatessen, still housed within the original buildings.

As befits the World’s Leading Malt Whisky Specialist, the dedicated Whisky Room offers enthusiasts and connoisseurs the opportunity to take a liquid tour of over 800 of the finest whiskies and sample some rare and unusual drams. Rare vintages ranging from 1936 to the present day are available to purchase, so it’s possible to travel through time, as well as Scotland, without even leaving Elgin!

On the day, Jim Murray, three times winner of the Glenfiddich Award for whisky writing, joined the directors and staff of Gordon & MacPhail to reopen the shop. Jim commented, “Much of the charm of Gordon and MacPhail is that they seem to do everything at a pace that somehow typifies the Northern Highlands. It may have taken them over 100 years to get the whisky side of their shop seriously off the ground, but it was worth waiting for.

The designated shop is simple and tasteful with room to step back and take an overall view of the whiskies available. And what a choice!! If you can't find the scotch you need there then, really, short of actually having the keys to Scotland's warehouses I'm not too sure where you are meant to go next.

It’s good also to see that the range of bourbons and Irish has improved. It is the kind of place a whisky connoisseur can spend a couple of hours in without realising where the time has gone, a must do, unofficial stopping point on the Whisky Trail.”

Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2005Jim also conducted several whisky masterclasses throughout the day, much to the delight of the whisky enthusiasts who had travelled from far and wide to obtain signed copies of his new book ‘Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2005’. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet one of the true whisky legends and Jim was beset with whisky questions all day.

The new Wine Room displays in excess of 600 wines and high quality champagnes, encompassing some of the finest vintages from around the world, including some emerging regions like Chile, New Zealand and South Africa and G&M staff conducted in depth wine tastings on their customers’ favourite regions throughout the day.

And for those discerning customers who were looking for the finest cheeses, cooked hams and tapas, found that the delicatessen offered a wide range of local dairy and meat products, including G&M’s own recipe cooked meats.

An unusual nosing competition tested entrants’ olfactory senses to the limits, challenging them to identify several different smells. The winner, Moira Cooke from Miltonduff, received a magnificent Puccini decanter filled with the finest 30 year old MacPhail’s Single Malt Scotch Whisky. James Fetherstonhaugh was the proud winner of a six-bottle case of Champagne and George Storm from Forres won a Walkers luxury hamper.
